Atlantis Found: Giant Sphinxes, Pyramids In Bermuda Triangle



Perhaps eclipsing the discoveries of Troy and King Tut’s tomb is the discovery of Atlantis.

Now, two daring scientists, Paul Weinzweig and Pauline Zalitzki, claim they’ve found it. They discovered the submerged ruins of the ancient city off the shores of Cuba. In the distant past the region was dry land, but now only the island of Cuba remains above water. The ancient city is 600 feet below the ocean and the team of researchers led by Weinzweig and Zalitzki are convinced it is Atlantis—the city lost for more than 10,000 years.

Two scientists, Paul Weinzweig and Pauline Zalitzki, working off the coast of Cuba and using a robot submersible, have confirmed that a gigantic city exists at the bottom of the ocean. The site of the ancient city—that includes several sphinxes and at least four giant pyramids plus other structures—amazingly sits within the boundries of the fabled Bermuda Triangle.

According to a report by arclein of Terra Forming Terra, Cuban Subsea Pyramid Complex, the evidence points to the city being simultaneously inundated with rising waters and the land sinking into the sea. This correlates exactly with the Atlantis legend.

The disaster may have occurred at the end of the last Ice Age. As the Arctic icecap catastrophically melted it caused sea levels to rise quickly around the world, especially affecting the Northern Hemisphere. Coast lines changed; land was lost; islands (even island continents) disappeared.

Plato

The Greek philosopher Plato wrote of lost Atlantis. At the end of last Ice Age sea levels were nearly 400 feet lower than present day levels. Once the waters began to rise, they rose swiftly. Conceivably, no technology then, or now, could have saved Atlantis from its watery grave. The evidence that land in what’s now the Caribbean also sank into the sea concurrently seems pretty certain.Arclein observes: “At the time uplifted portions of the Mid Atlantic Ridge subsided also including Lyonese and the home islands and land mass around the Azores. Even if that had not happened, this subsidence was amply large enough.

 “This would have produced an orthogonal pressure forcing subsidence to either East or West. Since the ridge between Cuba and Yucatan is the natural point of weakness between the Gulf subsidence basin and the Caribbean subsidence basin, it naturally subsided deeply. The driver for all this was the hydrostatic changes brought about by both the original crustal shift of 12,900 years ago that I have called the Pleistocene Nonconformity and the slow uplift of the Hudson Bay Basin brought about by the ending of the Ice Age.”

Cuban missile crisis stops research

According to journalist Luis Mariano Fernandez the city was first discovered decades ago, but all access to it was stopped during and after the Cuban Missile Crisis.

“The U.S. government discovered the alleged place during the Cuban missile crisis in the sixties, Nuclear submarines cruising in the Gulf (in deep sea) met pyramid structures. They immediately shut down the site and took control of him and the objects, in order that it will not come to Russians hands.”

The science team of deep ocean experts, archaeologists and oceanographers found ruins of ancient buildings 600 feet below the ocean. They say the city is Atlantis.

Using exploration submersibles, they discovered amazingly huge pyramid structures similar to (but larger than) the pyramids in Giza, Egypt. They estimate the Atlantis pyramids are constructed with stones weighing many hundreds of tons.

Incredibly the ancient city also has magnificent sphinxes and “stones that arranged like Stonehenge, and a written language engraved on the stones,” reports Fernandez.

The gigantic structure, also perhaps larger than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt, and initially identified by a doctor in the 1960s, has been independently verified by diving teams from France and the U.S.




A discovery that rewrites world history

Could such a discovery change Mankind’s view of history? Yes, it could change everything.
Fernandez writes, “It has confirmed that the stones were cut, carved and polished to make them fit together and thus form larger structures. On the strange inscriptions, some of them similar to Egyptian hieroglyphics, very little is known, except that they are very abundant and found in almost all parts of the field. They have also appeared symbols and drawings whose meaning is unknown.”


The exploration of Atlantis, called Project Exploramar, is expanding to discover more of the mysteries of the mega-city.


Speaking with a scientist about the possibility that the ruins are indeed Atlantis, Fernandez reports the expert replied:
“…in the Yucatan cultures today is possible that what still remains of the aborigines of those places perhaps the Olmecs or some very primitive civilization of Yucatan, the northern part of Central America—originated according to them on an island that sank by a cataclysm. This island is called Atlanticú.”
That too fits the stories about the sudden demise of the wondrous Atlantis.

During an interview about the exploration of the mega-city, Fernandez asked lead scientist Pauline Zalitzki about the civilaztion that built it.
“When we published the first news of this finding,” she said, “the University of Veracruz was interested in our work and we had recorded images of these structures on the seabed. Specifically, the Institute of Anthropology of the University excavations invited me. They were doing [studies] on parts and ruins of the Olmec civilization."

“When they saw these submarine images [they] found similarities and parallels with the ruins found in these excavations that the Institute was undertaking."

The Olmecs and other native peoples all have primary morphology marking the arrival of this continent. This mean coming from the direction of Cuba, and had to occur in a very large earthquake where their land sank. Morphologies indicate that they belong to three families who were saved. One of these families came to the coast of Veracruz, which are supposedly the Olmec. Others came to Central America and traveled to the Pacific coast, and these families created the civilization of the Americas as we know it today, because they distributed all their knowledge.

“When these anthropologists saw underwater images of this city, and saw some stone monoliths, some symbol, and inscriptions, they identified with Olmec motifs. They were very surprised.”

The Olmecs devolved from the survivors of Atlantis, a much superior culture destroyed aft the end of the Ice Age flooding. The world was reshaped and a super-civilization destroyed, remembered for millennia only in legend and a passing refernce by the philosopher Plato.

But Atlantis was real, is real: scientists Paul Weinzweig and Pauline Zalitzki have found it.

Anonymous Hacks US Sentencing Website in Retaliation for Aaron Swartz’ Death



Hacked data could reveal government secrets, including the identities of informants and targets of surveillance.

The hacker collective ‘Anonymous’ took down a government website for the U.S. Sentencing Commission, USSC.gov, late Friday night, citing that a ‘line was crossed’ with the death of Reddit founder and prominent SOPA opponent Aaron Swartz.
ZD Net covers the details of the site attack:
By 3am PST ussc.gov was down (it has since been dropped from the DNS), yet as of this writing the IP address (66.153.19.162) still returns the defaced site’s contents.

It appears that via the U.S. government website, Anonymous had distributed encrypted government files and left a statement on the website that de-encryption keys would be publicly released (thus releasing the as-yet unkonwn information held on the stolen files) if the U.S. government did not comply with Anonymous’ ultimatum demands for legal reform.
Dubbed “Operation Last Resort,” Anonymous targeted the sentencing entity to draw attention to the harsh “justice” dealt to Swartz by the feds for systematically downloading academic papers. Friends and family blame prosecutors for ‘bullying’ Swartz and driving him to suicide, while others question whether the activist was silenced.

A message posted on the hacked website read, in part, “We have seen the erosion of due process, the dilution of constitutional rights, the usurpation of the rightful authority of courts by the “discretion” or prosecutors… We have seen how the law is wielded less and less to uphold justice, and more and more to exercise control, authority and power in the interests of oppression or personal gain.”
The hacked files taken from the site may yield significant data. CBS News reports, “The hackers say they’ve infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.” The files are reportedly available for download and being circulated, with an encryption key, to fellow hackers.

Two Women Arrested After Trying To Block Smart Meter

 

 

 



Naperville resident Jenn Stahl is arrested after trying to block the installation of a new “smart meter” at her home.

 

 

Two Naperville mothers were arrested Wednesday, after they tried to block utility workers from installing new “smart meters.”

CBS 2’s Dana Kozlov reports one of those women was released from custody late Wednesday afternoon, the other was still in custody, but should be released soon.

Their arrests were the culmination of a two-year battle against “smart meter” installation in Naperville.

At Jenn Stahl’s home in Naperville, officers were forced to cut open a lock on her back gate to allow crews to get in to access her meter, when she refused to open the gate herself.

“It’s new technology. It’s city property. The city’s allowed to upgrade their technology, upgrade their equipment, and that’s what the city’s doing,” an officer explained to Stahl.

The officer said Stahl’s proper recourse was to take her case to the courts, or to file a complaint with the city. He said the utility workers were just following directions to replace old meters with new “smart meters.”

“But it’s more than what I consent to do. And I’m fully aware of what the new functions of the meter do, and I don’t consent to that,” Stahl said.

“No matter where you move, no matter what jurisdiction you move into, you agree to all that stuff. If you’re in the city of Chicago, or the city of Elgin, or wherever you’re at – the city of Naperville – that’s city property,” the officer said. “The law allows it.”

“That doesn’t make it right,” Stahl said before officers cut the lock on her gate and utility crews went in to install a new “smart meter.”

When Stahl stood in front of her old meter to block the crews, she was arrested for interfering with a police officer. After officers slapped the cuffs on her, she said, “This is supposed to be America, and people are supposed to have the right to protect their property.”

Several hundred Naperville residents oppose the wireless “smart meters,” citing concerns about possible health problems that might be caused by the meters’ wireless signal, which is always on. They have said studies show the RF signal could be dangerous, when combined with other RF frequencies already in existence.

They have been battling Naperville authorities over the issue since 2011.

At other homes, Naperville utility workers hopped fences onto private property to install the meters over homeowners’ objections.

Kim Bendis filmed utility workers at her home as she told them to leave, but they started replacing her meter anyway

“Get off my property right now,” she said. When a worker began cutting open a locking device over the meter, Bendis started shouting.

“No. No. Get off,” she said. “You are not allowed on my property. Get off my property right now.”

Hours later, she was arrested while shooting video of police officers outside Stahl’s house.

When officers told her to stop her audio recording of them, she refused, and she was arrested.

“We are trying to protect our property. We are trying to advocate for residents who are trying to say no to a product that is being debated all around the country,” Kim Bendis said before her arrest. “The only recourse we have is to document on film.”

Naperville City Manager Doug Krieger said the city is within its legal rights to install the “smart meters” on private property, replacing old meters which are also their property. Krieger also said the meters are safe.

 

Krieger said Stahl and Bendis deserved to be arrested if they violated the law, but it was not immediately clear what charges the women faced.

Opponents of the “smart meters” also have cited security concerns, because the meters are capable of tracking exactly when a customer is using electricity, and opponents fear it would allow strangers to know when they are home, or gone at work. Some fear hackers could access that information.

He said the city intends to finish installing the “smart meters” this month, and denied accusations from opponents of the new meters that the city is bullying them.

“We absolutely are not bullies. I believe we’ve bent over backwards to accommodate them,” Krieger said.

 

Krieger said homeowners who object to the “smart meters” have been given the option to receive non-wireless versions, but many said they still don’t trust the security of those devices.

There’s a pending federal lawsuit against Naperville about the meters, as well. Homeowners who are part of the suit said Naperville officials shouldn’t proceed with “smart meter” installations while the case is pending.

Krieger, however, said the meters are funded in part through an $11 million federal grant, that requires them to complete the installation. He said the lawsuit could drag on for years, “and we don’t have that much time.”

Consciousness: What It Is And How It Can Be Manipulated

Consciousness goes beyond biology, it is the ‘thing’ that allows us to perceive our external environment.

At the same time, our external environment is a result of the level of consciousness that we all operate at.  Quantum physics is revealing that how we perceive our reality is directly responsible for creating our reality. Consciousness is also responsible for shaping our biology, if you look at placebo studies for example, whatever we believe, perceive and are convinced to be of benefit, our bodies will create the chemical flows and biological environment necessary to produce the desired result or cure. The placebo effect is one of the most fascinating aspects of health care, with results that have been proven to work at least fifty percent of the time during treatment of health related problems. Even recent findings, like neuroplasticity give further credence to the power of consciousness, and ability we all have to self-heal. It is a known scientific fact that our biological make up, down to our cells and the external reality around us is shaped by us, our perception, beliefs, emotions, and feelings. How we perceive the world through an internal perspective is responsible for creating and shaping the external world we see around us. Education, biology and medicine have taught us that our brain is responsible for sending different signals to our body, that our brain determines everything we do, this isn’t true. Sure, it’s true that our brain sends signals, and tells our bodies what to do, but we do not recognize that something is communicating with our brain that causes it to react and instruct the body on what to do. What is sending signals to our brain? Our heart is, the place in which you come from, the intent that lay behind your action is important, and can depend on what level of consciousness you operate at. I do not mean to use the word level to imply better or worse.

Research is beginning to show how the heart plays a tremendous role in our lives, far beyond what is commonly known. The heart is responsible for emitting electromagnetic fields that change according to our emotions. Where do our emotions come from? Our emotions are a direct result to how we perceive the enviroment around us. Person A can have a different emotional response than person B even though the event that created the emotional response could be exactly the same.  For example, if two people are making love, and two separate people are observing the love making taking place, they could both have a different emotional response to it, it all depends on what ‘level’ of consciousness they operate at. Another example is war, for some people it might trigger sadness, hate or anger, and for others it might trigger a sense of accomplishment, patriotism and bravery. For others it might just be an experience they no longer resonate with, and view it from a place of neutrality, not judging it but recognizing that  they no longer desire it for this planet. Our emotional response, our reaction to a certain situations depend on a number of factors,  a response of bravery and patriotism usally comes from a manipulation of consciousness. By this I mean many people have been brainwashed to believe that war is necessary, from this programmed belief comes certain emotional responses.

Our reaction to the environment around us also plays an important role in shaping our reality. Can you be calm, and at peace no matter what events are unfolding around you in your external world? The heart has a system of neurons that have both long term and short term memory, and the siglans sent to our brain have a direct effect on the signals that the brain sends to our body. The heart sends a tremendous amount of information to the brain, yet mainstream science assumes the brain is where it all starts.  Our intuition, our heart, our higher self, our soul is what is becomming known as we move through 2013 and beyond.

If we look at perception of reality, it’s changed over time. One hundred years ago, human beings on Earth had a completely different perception of reality, understandably so. Our perception of reality is responsible for creating belief systems, consciousness cannot change, and reality cannot change without letting go of belief systems. When we choose to let go of belief systems, we change our reality simply by having an open mind that’s not afraid of change. Sometimes we hold on to belief systems so much that they become our truth, sometimes we believe our thoughts so much that they become our absolute truth.

Manipulation of consciousness.

 When I say manipulation of consciousness, I mean that the human race has been made to believe, as well as perceive reality in a way that does not represent the true nature of our reality. We are constantly being fed with lies, and tend to believe them without question. Our beleifs about the world and how it is, is directly correlated to how we perceive our environment, which is directly correlated to what level of consciousness we operate at and what type of experience the human race creates for itself. How is our consciousness manipulated? Many examples exist to illustrate how our consciousness has been manipulated. 9/11 is a great example, humanity was convinced of a terrorist attack that was used to justify the invasion of Iraq. This event developed a beleif system in millions, if not billions of people that the world was being attacked by terrorists. From this perception, it allowed many other unethical events to unfold. Another examlpe are UFOs, water fluoridation, mass media, health care and education. One of my most favourite examples is the energy industry. If we see alternative energy methods presented to us on tv, and even being implimented by multinational corporations, we believe that is the be all and end all of solutions. Did you know that we have zero point energy devices available?

It is no longer a secret that certain concepts, findings and aspects of our reality are concealed from the human race. We give our power over to a small group of elite and the corporations they run, and we are convined that the issues on planet Earth are being delt with. Concealment of certain aspects of reality has the potential to keep us creating the same experience for human beings on the planet, it has the ability to keep us in a perception lockdown, not knowing that there are other elements of reality that could completly change the percetpion of the human being, and how they operate. We have been taken out of touch with ourselves, and who we really are.

It’s 2013 now, and the world is moving through a period of transparency.  Human beings are beginning to see through the viel that has blinded the masses. We are starting to question activities on planet Earth and why we operate the way we do. If you were an alien looking down on the planet, i’m sure you would scratch your head. It just doesn’t make sense, and more information is presenting itself to show us that we have to do it collectively. We have to realise that we are all one human race, on planet Earth and that there is no separation between us. We are all literally facets of one another, we created everything we see here today. It’s time to stop complaining and just create something new, it’s as simple as that.

The Earth’s Magnetic Poles Are Shifting



I’m sure that many of you have heard the ‘concept’ that the Earths magnetic poles (North and South) are shifting, or that some kind of a rapid pole shift is going to occur.

A pole shift is when the Earth’s magnetic fields switch places, so that the North Pole is now in the South, and vice versa. This is no longer a concept, but an actual fact. Some of us may have been led to believe that the poles would rapidly shift on December 21st, 2012. Obviously, this theory was untrue. However, the poles are shifting and have done so many times in the past, but the theory that the poles could shift instantly at any moment is just that, a theory.

The Earths magnetic poles reverse every 200,000 to 300,000 years, and a complete reversal usually takes thousands of years to complete. Although, it has been twice that long since the poles have last reversed. Scientists now say that the poles are shifting at a rate of 40 miles per year, which is actually quite a long distance if you think about it, but maybe not that much when you think of how big the Earth really is. In my own opinion I think that this definitely has something to do with the climate change that has been happening over the past few decades. When I say Climate change I do not mean ‘Global Warming.’ I mean climate change. Remember it did snow in Rome for the first time in 40 years last year!

Research suggests that this shift in the magnetic poles could very well be a factor in what has been causing the increased number of earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis that have been frequently happening around the world. Another potential factor for these weather and Earth changes that is often talked about is the increased use of HAARP. (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program.) Which presumably can magnify and direct some of this sever weather.  It would make a lot of sense considering that these poles are moving pretty quickly, but it appears it has not been fully proven up to this point. There have been many so-called ‘prophets’ in the past that have predicted these extreme cases of weather. How did they know? Is it because of the ancient evidence that proves that these pole shifts have occurred?

I feel this is may be Gaia’s way of cleansing herself. Yes, there have been some devastating events that have occurred that may or may not be the result of the shifting poles, but this is a great time of change and transformation, for us, and our beautiful planet Earth. There is nothing to be afraid of as deep down we know we will be where we need to be should we need to experience something. This may also serve as a wake up call to the planet collective as it appears we are in need of one.

Unlike drugs, such cognitive enhancement therapy is less easily available and is thus less likely to be adopted by healthy people. Nonetheless, the scientists suggest that within 10 years time intra-brain devices and sensors will open a new realm of enhanced neurobiology for those who can afford it. In this context, the scientists wonder whether it can be ethically acceptable for the world to be divided into the cognitively-enhanced and unenhanced. Will the humanity accept the idea that significant cognitive enhancement should be available to purchase on the open market or will there be a push for legislation to maintain a more level playing field?

The other question that the experts are asking is what happens if cognitive enhancement program goes awry or if it falls in the wrong hands. Cognitive enhancement drugs and devices have a very wide-ranging effects on various systems of human body since they work by targeting neurotransmitter systems. In this respect, WEF scientists argue that "there is a significant possibility of (un)intended effects on other systems – for example, drugs to enhance learning may lead to a greater willingness to take risks; drugs to enhance working memory may lead to increased impulsive behaviour". Indeed, recent research into the field already suggests that, in addition to improving long term memory, it is possible to use TMS to manipulate or even suspend a person’s moral judgement of right versus wrong. The technology can also be used to “erase” memory and deliberately cause permanent brain damage. In this sense, it is not difficult to see how new cognitive enhancement drugs and technologies can open up a space for their misuse by criminal organizations and terrorist networks.

Another issue that the WEF experts decided to present for discussion this year is the implications of longer life-span among humans. The WEF team suggests that while "medical advances are prolonging life, long-term palliative care is expensive. Covering the costs associated with old age could be a struggle". Indeed, according to official statistics people all over the globe now live up to 35 percent longer than hundred years ago and more funds are needed to provide adequate care for the millions of elderly. However, the problem of funding is not the only concern which is related to longer life-span. The risk of over-populating the planet is yet another issue which the world will soon face.

In this respect, most radical commentators were quick to suggest that the only solution to the problem of longer living humans is euthanasia. The proponents of this view contend that with medical advancements even the weakest and the sickest people will survive and live to their late 90s and possible 100s, which will not only lead to a significant increase in global population, but will also negate the fundamental law of the survival of the fittest. In this context, some suggest that euthanasia might be the only way out from the vicious circle of artificially healthy individuals living unnaturally long lives.

The last and probably the most controversial X Factor that will be discussed during the Davos Forum is the possible discovery of extraterrestrial life. While it is the first time that the Forum addresses the aliens, the issue has recently become a frequent theme of discussion among the world leading politicians and military officials. In December 2012, Russian Prime Minster Dmitry Medvedev mused on topic of aliens after completing an on-camera interview with international reporters in Moscow. Back then, Mr Medvedev jokingly claimed that "I will not tell you how many of them [aliens] are among us because it may cause panic". It turns out, however, that Mr Medvedev's concern with the aliens did not end last December. A shocking Davos Forum agenda aims to bring the topic of aliens beyond the realm of jokes.

WEF experts contend that "given the pace of space exploration, it is increasingly conceivable that we may discover the existence of alien life or other planets that could support human life. In 10 years’ time we may have evidence not only that Earth is not unique but also that life exists elsewhere in the universe." In this context, WEF team urges the global elite to prepare themselves and their nations for such discovery. The scientists suggest that new funding and new brain power will be needed to overcome the challenges that the humanity will face as a result of its encounter with an extra-terrestrial civilization. The world might even need to create artificial-intelligence emissaries to survive an inter-stellar crossing. The discovery of an Earth 2.0 or life beyond our planet might also inspire new generations of space entrepreneurs to meet the challenge of taking human exploration of the galaxy from the realm of fiction to fact.

At the same time, WEF experts do not believe that the discovery of alien life will change the fabric of human society in the short-run. While the discovery would certainly be one of the biggest news stories of the year and interest would be intense, it would not change the world immediately. Over the long run, however, the psychological and philosophical implications of the discovery could be profound. In the opinion of WEF scientists, "the discovery of even simple life would fuel speculation about the existence of other intelligent beings and challenge many assumptions that underpin human philosophy and religion."

All in all, it seems that humanity is heading to exciting times, and Davos may be the first trigger that will unleash a series of most extraordinary worldwide revel worldwide revelations.

Micro Aerial Vehicles mini-spydrone [MAV]

 A team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University is helping to develop a micro aerial vehicle (MAV for short) that will be no bigger than a bug.

By figuring out how butterflies flutter among flowers with amazing grace and agility, the researchers hope to help small airborne robots mimic these maneuvers. Johns Hopkins' engineers have been aiming high-speed video cameras at some of the prettiest bugs on the planet to study bugs' movements.

U.S. defense agencies like the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, which have funded this research, are supporting the development of bug-size flyers to carry out reconnaissance, search-and-rescue and environmental monitoring missions without risking human lives.

"For military missions in particular, these MAVs must be able to fly successfully through complex urban environments, where there can be tight spaces and turbulent gusts of wind," said Tiras Lin, a Whiting School of Engineering undergraduate who has been conducting the high-speed video research. "These flying robots will need to be able to turn quickly." Lin's research has been supervised by Rajat Mittal, a professor of mechanical engineering.

The butterfly research will aid the development of flying bug-size robots.

A  MAV would be used for military reconnaissance operations in urban areas, where densely packed buildings and unpredictable winds create unique challenges for a small flying device. It can be remotely controlled and is equipped with a camera and a microphone. It can fly through an open window, or it can attach to your clothing until you take it in your home. It can land on you, and it may have the potential to take a DNA sample or leave RFID tracking nanotechnology on your skin.

Also DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, released photos of the Hummingbird, a tiny, ultra lightweight remote-controlled flying vehicle designed to resemble an actual hummingbird. The Hummingbird was designed specifically to let troops in urban combat to get a look around corners and inside buildings:

Colossal cosmic structure discovered

An international team of astronomers, led by academics from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), has found the largest known structure in the universe. The large quasar group (LQG) is so large that it would take a vehicle travelling at the speed of light some 4 billion years to cross it. The team publish their results in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The coloured background indicates the peaks and troughs in the occurrence of quasars at the distance of the LQG. Darker colours indicate more quasars, lighter colours indicate fewer quasars. Quasars are the nuclei of galaxies from the early days of the universe that undergo brief periods of extremely high brightness that make them visible across huge distances. These periods are 'brief' in astrophysics terms but actually last 10-100 million years.
Since 1982 it has been known that quasars tend to group together in clumps or 'structures' of surprisingly large sizes, forming large quasar groups or LQGs.
The team, led by Dr Roger Clowes from UCLan's Jeremiah Horrocks Institute, has identified the LQG which is so significant in size it also challenges the Cosmological Principle: the assumption that the universe, when viewed at a sufficiently large scale, looks the same no matter where you are observing it from.


The modern theory of cosmology is based on the work of Albert Einstein, and depends on the assumption of the Cosmological Principle. The Principle is assumed but has never been demonstrated observationally 'beyond reasonable doubt'.
To give some sense of scale, our galaxy, the Milky Way, is separated from its nearest neighbour, the Andromeda Galaxy, by about 0.75 Megaparsecs (Mpc) or 2.5 million light-years.
Whole clusters of galaxies can be 2-3 Mpc across but LQGs can be 200 Mpc or more across. Based on the Cosmological Principle and the modern theory of cosmology, calculations suggest that astrophysicists should not be able to find a structure larger than 370 Mpc.
Dr Clowes' newly discovered LQG however has a typical dimension of 500 Mpc. But because it is elongated, its longest dimension is 1200 Mpc (or 4 billion light years) - some 1600 times larger than the distance from the Milky Way to Andromeda.


Dr Clowes said:
"While it is difficult to fathom the scale of this LQG, we can say quite definitely it is the largest structure ever seen in the entire universe. This is hugely exciting – not least because it runs counter to our current understanding of the scale of the universe.
"Even travelling at the speed of light, it would take 4 billion years to cross. This is significant not just because of its size but also because it challenges the Cosmological Principle, which has been widely accepted since Einstein. Our team has been looking at similar cases which add further weight to this challenge and we will be continuing to investigate these fascinating phenomena."

Star Trek's "tractor" beam created in miniature by researchers

A team of scientists from Scotland and the Czech Republic has created a real-life         “tractor” beam, as featured in the Star Trek movies, which for the first time allows a beam of light to attract objects.

Within the experimental system, light beam is converted into a pulling device, that gathers micro-objects just like when using a chain.

Although light manipulation techniques have existed since the 1970s, this is the first time a light beam has been used to draw objects towards the light source, albeit at a microscopic level.

Researchers from the University of St Andrews and the Institute of Scientific Instruments (ISI) in the Czech Republic have found a way to generate a special optical field that efficiently reverses radiation pressure of light.

The new technique could lead to more efficient medical testing, such as in the examination of blood samples.

In the US science fiction show, a tractor beam was a method of using a beam of light which could pull space-ships and other large objects towards the source of the light.

The team, led by Dr Tomas Cizmar, Research Fellow in the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews, with Dr Oto Brzobohaty and Professor Pavel Zemanek, both of ISI, discovered a technique which will allow them to provide 'negative' force acting upon minuscule particles.

Normally when matter and light interact the solid object is pushed by the light and carried away in the stream of photons.

Such radiation force was first identified by Johanes Kepler when observing that tails of comets point away from the sun.

Over recent years researchers have realised that while this is the case for most of the optical fields, there is a space of parameters when this force reverses.

The scientists at St Andrews and ISI have now demonstrated the first experimental realisation of this concept together with a number of exciting applications for bio-medical photonics and other disciplines.

The exciting aspect is that the occurrence of negative force is very specific to the properties of the object, such as size and composition.

This in turn allows optical sorting of micro-objects in a simple and inexpensive device. Over the last decade optical fractionation has been identified as one of the most promising bio-medical applications of optical manipulation allowing, for example, sorting of macromolecules, organelles or cells.

Interestingly, the scientists identified certain conditions, in which objects held by the “tractor” beam force-field, re-arranged themselves to form a structure which made the beam even stronger.

Dr Cizmar said: “Because of the similarities between optical and acoustic particle manipulation we anticipate that this concept will provide inspiration for exciting future studies in areas outside the field of photonics.”

Dr Brzobohaty said: “These methods are opening new opportunities for fundamental phonics as well as applications for life-sciences.”

Professor Zemanek said: “The whole team have spent a number of years investigating various configurations of particles delivery by light. I am proud our results were recognised in this very competitive environment and I am looking forward to new experiments and applications. It is a very exciting time.”
